ABOUT THE PROJECT

This web application is for the Mapping Project course at the Cartography M.Sc. program, Technical University of Munich (TUM).

The purpose of the application is to raise public awareness about mine siting in Halkidiki. Halkidiki is a Greek region in Southern Macedonia with numerous mine sites.

As a result of these mining activities, a significant part of the forests and agricultural areas have been destroyed, rivers (which serves as a source of water in these communities) have become unfit for drinking, widelife species displaced and some villages destroyed due to the micro seismic activities from the mines. Although there have been many protests in Halkidiki, Thessaloniki and Athens in the last few years, these actions has not yielded positive impacts as regards curbing the adverse effects of the mining activities.

This project aims to reach an even larger audience in Greece and the International Community on the impact of siting mines at certain locations. Full project here.
